Barbie doll history

Mattel was founded by Harold Mattson, Ruth Handler and Elliot Handler.
They producing gift items and via costume jewelry they ended up at gift items and dollhouse furniture.
The toy company was born, producing mainly toy guns and musical toys.

Ruth Handler watched her daughter Barbara at
play with paper dolls and came up with the idea
to produce a 3D version of this famous fashion
doll.

She knew it was just as important for young girls
to imagine what it would be like to be grown up.

During a trip to Switzerland, Ruth finds Lilli in Lucerne.
Lilli a german doll made of hard plastic, was inspired by comic strip from the German newspaper 'Bild Zeitung'.
She purchased three of them, she gave one to her daughter and took the others back to his company Mattel.

Upon her return, Handler and his engineer Jack Ryan began working on design of the doll. The doll was intended to be a teenage fashion doll.

She named her doll Barbie because her own daughter Barbara inspired it.
Barbie's full name is "Barbie Millicent Roberts.

Barbie was born in 1959, exactly the 9th of march, as she was introduced to the buyers on the 1959 Toy Fair on that day.

The doll is 11 1/2 inches tall and features a movable head, arms and legs. Initially, toy buyers were skeptical and many of them dosen't beleive in.

The first Barbie doll came dressed in a black and white zebra striped swimsuit along with glasses and nail polish on her hands and feet, and was available as either a blonde or brunette.
Her clothes was created by Mattel fashion designer Charlotte Johnson.

The first Barbie dolls were manufactured by Kokusai Boeki company as subcontracter Pony ltd. in Japan.

New doll, new marketing. Barbie appear on television, and quickly became popular.
Around 351,000 Barbie dolls were sold during the first year of production, each sold at $3.00.
